One church, three villages, two thousand years of history

Introduction

Situated within an Iron Age hillfort overlooking the Derbyshire and Leicestershire countryside, the Priory Church of St Mary and St Hardulph has served the communities of Breedon on the Hill, Tonge and Wilson for at least 1200 years.

The stories of the people who have lived, worshipped and been buried here are now being uncovered as part of a three year project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

What are we doing?

Over the next few years, we will be investigating the history and archaeology of this site through a series of community projects.

Through activities such as recording the gravestones in our churchyard, transcribing church documents and capturing oral histories we will rediscover and retell the stories of this important site.

We will offer events that will encourage visitors to this important priory church, to see for themselves the imposing position above the village and enjoy the far reaching views. We are encouraging volunteers to get involved or simply share stories from their past.

If you have photographs to share or stories we can record for an oral history archive please contact our heritage officer Rachel who will be happy to explain this further. Rachel can be contacted by email on: breedonheritage@gmail.com or like us on Facebook or Instagram (breedonheritage).
