Welcome to Unhidden Communities

Introducing the Project

If stones could tell stories, what would Breedon Priory Church’s tales be of? An Iron Age Hillfort perhaps, or of Anglo-Saxon carvers creating exquisite creations for their minster? Might it moan about the naughty medieval monks* who ruined their monastery, or recount the lives of those buried in its churchyard? Whilst the stones themselves are silent, through the National Lottery Heritage Fund we hope to uncover these stories and more – and we’d love members of Breedon, Tonge and Wilson to get involved!

Through a variety of projects, including graveyard survey, oral history and artwork, we will showcase the people who have made Breedon Priory Church the place it is today, and celebrate the building’s important role in the community both past and present. However, we can only do this with your help, so if you would like to get involved contact us on Facebook (BreedonsUnhiddenCommunities) or using the form below.

Our project title, Unhidden Communities, is inspired both by our desire to recover the stories of those for whom the church has been a special place and by Matthew 5:14, ‘A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden’. A social and physical landmark for centuries, with your help we can rediscover Breedon’s past and retell its stories for future generations. Watch this space for details of our upcoming volunteer event, as well as an opportunity to meet our Heritage Project Officer. Until then, make sure you follow us on Facebook for all the latest goings on!

*canons actually, but that’s another story!
